Uh, well...I've never actually kicked the bucket here, so I dunno exactly how it works, but...basically the Malno-nos don't necessarily like it when we die. We're their little lab rats or whatever, and bringing us back kinda takes a lotta work or something. So to make sure we're not jumping off bridges left and right, when people come back from the dead they take something away from that person. Could be a memory of a loved one, could be all your memories, or maybe a sense - you can't see, can't hear, can't taste...stuff like that.

I know the penalty wears off after a while or something, but I dunno how long it really takes. I'm pretty sure it's a real long time though...like, months long.
